City of Phoenix and Arizona State University CoolSeal Research Study
In 2020, Phoenix partnered with ASU for the "Cool Pavement Pilot Program" to cool neighborhoods and reduce energy costs. They applied CoolSeal to 36 miles of roads across eight districts, with ASU using various methods like infrared imaging and sensors to monitor temperatures for ten months.
Results showed CoolSeal surfaces were consistently cooler than traditional asphalt, averaging 10.5-to-12 degrees Fahrenheit cooler at noon and 2.4 degrees cooler at sunrise. Nighttime air temperatures were also 0.5 degrees lower over CoolSeal. Sub-surface temperatures were notably 4.8 degrees cooler, indicating potential pavement preservation benefits. Encouraged by these findings, Phoenix expanded CoolSeal citywide to over 120 miles, integrating it permanently into their street maintenance program for ongoing urban heat mitigation.
